In the year of 1959, Mrs. Kathy Phelps founded the chapter of AFS for Venezuela . But it is in the year 1960, when the first group of Venezuelan youths between 16 and 18 years travel to the United States . This date marked the beginning of the exchanges in Venezuela .

In 1967 the Hosting Program began with the reception of the first exchange of four North American youths toward Venezuela for a period of 2 months.

The image of AFS Venezuela was gaining recognition and acceptance inside and outside the country which produced its inevitable growth.

In the period of 1977 at the 1981 settled down the first National Board presided by the Professor José Luis Villanueva, exceptional volunteer and promoter of the AFS programs at a national level. Professor Villanueva carried out his role as a chairperson of AFS Venezuela for 15 years and his work as a leader of the AFS programs is recognized by all the volunteers of AFS. At the moment, he continuous participating actively in the Organization as a Counselor Member or the National Board.

In the 90´s AFS Venezuela achieved the international recognition for its leadership in the Sending and Hosting programs, remarkable position occupied among the Caribbean countries.
